Devil’s Claw [Harpagophytum Procumbens DC] is a perennial plant of the sesame family, native to Africa, which grows in the desert and savannah regions. The flowers are reddish purple in color and quite lovely, but the fruit has hard, claw-like hooks on its surface, and this is why it is called “Devil’s Claw”. It is also known as “Lion Killer” because the sharp, hard hooks hurt wild animals’ skin. For around 250 years, Devil’s Claw roots have been dried and used as a natural herb in the daily lives of native Africans. It was later brought to Europe and used by Europeans as well.
